Every centre's score is built from five measured signals. We list them here in order of weight because the order tells you what we think matters most when a family is choosing where to leave their kids.

• Sentiment, 28%: a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, praise and complaints alike.
• Rating, 26%: the centre's aggregate star rating on Google.
• Volume, 20%: how many reviews the centre has, log-scaled so a centre with 300 reviews doesn't automatically dwarf one with 30 just because of raw count, but still gets credit for a longer track record.
• Recency, 12%: how recently families have actually left reviews.
• Completeness, 14%: whether basic details are listed and correct, phone, website, opening hours, address.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

Two childcare centres can sit on the exact same 4.3-star average and be very different places. One might have a scattering of minor gripes about parking. The other might have a run of recent reviews all describing the same thing: understaffed rooms, high educator turnover, or slow responses to incident reports. The star average hides that pattern entirely because it collapses everything into one number. Reading what recent reviews actually describe, and looking for repeated, specific themes rather than one-off complaints, is the only way to catch that difference. That's why sentiment is weighted above the star rating itself in our score.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still counts for a lot, at 26%, because it's the most direct summary a reviewer gives and it's what most families check first. Volume matters because a centre with three reviews and a centre with 150 are not equally certain quantities: log-scaling means volume still rewards a longer, broader track record without letting sheer review count overwhelm everything else. Recency matters because childcare centres change: new room leaders, new management, renovated outdoor areas, changed enrolment policies. A glowing review from four years ago tells you less than one from last month. Completeness matters in a more practical way: a centre that lists a working phone number, current hours, a website and a full address is simply easier and safer to deal with when you're trying to book a tour or sort out an urgent pickup.

Where the score runs low-confidence

Some of the 14 centres in this guide have very few recent reviews. When that's the case, we label the score as low-confidence rather than presenting it with the same weight as a centre with a deep, recent review history. A score built on three reviews from two years ago is a different kind of evidence than one built on sixty reviews from the last six months, and we think you should be able to see that difference at a glance rather than have it buried in the number.
